If there is an area that greatly inspires game developers, then it has to be the Middle Ages.
Elk Studios has followed this path too, and their slot titled Crusader uses this type of inspiration.
I took some time to try out this slot, and this is my unbiased review:
Crusader is one of a kind slot, and the developer has set it on 5x4 reels and a total of 26 lines.
However, with the help of some of its features, this video slot has the ability to expand and get as many as 12 symbols, and up to 98 active lines.
I was impressed with the feature too, and among them is the Crusader Wild, re-spins, free spins, expansion symbols, and nudges.
Betting and Prizes
On Crusader, you get the priority to pick the wager directly. In simple terms, the available betting range goes into covering the entire game.
ELK slots don’t differ much when it comes to the betting range, and to spin the reels, I needed to use at least $0.20 per spin. The highest betting amount on this slot is $100 per slot.
The developer has placed a cap on the winnings, and the maximum that you can receive is $250,000 from a single spin, or 2,500x the stake.
For its variance, the developer has given Crusader medium-high volatility, so it has some risky attached to it.
However, I was impressed with the RTP 96.10%, which works wonders in taming the high volatility.
Crusader Slot Features
This slot uses medium-sized wilds that comes in gold and red colours, alongside the Wild logo. I was happy to use it as a substitute for the regular icons, in addition to having it as part of new winning combinations.
The Crusader Wilds land in stacked form, and it can cover the entire reel. However, this feature will only appear on the 1st and the 5th columns. If it fails to take over the reels, it will trigger a re-spin, which will eventually nudge the symbols to fully appear in sight.
Two Crusader Wilds in full view appearing in a single round will allow you access to the free spins. Initially, you will get 8 rounds, with the 1st and the 5th reels being covered by sticky wilds.
It’s during the free spins session that you will get the Expansion symbols. Once these appear, they will boost the game area by adding one more row.
Theme & Design
The game uses inspiration from the Holy Wars of the Middle Ages, together with the Crusades from the kingdoms of Europe that went on a mission to the Middle East. This is a very deep topic, but ELK has managed to handle it well.
ELK is known for great graphics, and Crusader does not disappoint. Among the symbols that the developer has used is a crusader, a goblet, daggers, holy books, wild crosses, shields with a cross, expansion symbols, and some Royals.
Crusader has an interesting concept, but I would have loved to see higher payouts to go hand in hand with its high volatility.
